There is a striking congruence between the diet a person eats and the speed at which they appear to age. For example, the sheer number of calories a person consumes will have a profound effect on how many free radicals are produced by the body. If these free radicals are not offset by antioxidants, they can have negative effects. Eating unhealthy fats can increase inflammation in the body. Even the pH level of the body is affected by foods, and this can have a profound effect on the aging process. A person's blood should be on the alkaline side of neutral at all times. This means it should have a pH level of a little over 7, which is considered neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic and above is alkaline. There are many things that can alter the body's pH level including stress, exposure to toxins, and autoimmune responses. Diet, however, is one of the primary contributing factors when it comes to blood pH levels. In order to keep your pH levels in the best range for overall health, including resistance to premature aging, about sixty percent of the foods you consume should have an alkaline effect on the body. If you have a low pH and need to bring it up to normal levels, increase that percentage to eighty. So what foods are considered alkaline and which are acidic? Here are a few foods that can really help you balance your blood pH, and some that are major â€œno-nosâ€. There are some foods on the alkaline side that you may not expect. For example, lemons and limes have some of the most powerful alkaline forming effects on the body. Remember, that just because something has an acidic effect outside the body doesn't mean that it will have the same effect on your blood. Most fruits and vegetables are on the alkaline side. While we may think of sweet as being the opposite of acidity flavor wise, just about every sweetener is actually acid-forming in the body, with the exceptions of Stevia and Ki Sweet. Most spices and seasonings are also alkaline. For protein, you will want to stick to things like eggs, chicken breast, yogurt, and various seeds and nuts. On the other end of the spectrum, one of the worst things a person can do to their body is to use artificial sweeteners. Sodas, processed sugar, and bleached flour are all on par with cigarettes for creating extreme acidity in the body; but, artificial sweeteners are even worse than all of those. Anyone who drinks diet drinks to try to lose weight is really doing a number on their body and is threatening to age it even faster. Also, while sea salt is alkaline, refined salt is extremely acidic in the body. As you can see, for most of us, eating foods that help achieve more alkaline blood will require a change in diet; but, the benefits include greater health which translates also into maintaining beauty for a longer period of time.
